Introduction to GBR Differential Gears

We are the worldwide leader in Land Rover differential gearing. Unless otherwise noted, all of our gear sets are our own design and specification. We have pioneered the development of many unique and innovative features such as reverse rotation designs, alternative ratios, high strength tooth counts, cryogenic treatments and cost effective ring gear support systems. Our competitors are now imitating our ideas and breathlessly announcing these “new” features! Don’t be fooled, we are still the leader in Land Rover differential gearing innovation. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, we are certainly flattered!

Unlike our competitors, our gear sets come as complete kits. This means that they include anything and everything needed to install them, such as pinion height & pinion bearing preload shims, crush sleeves, ring gear bolts, ring gear bolt washers, new pinion nuts, washers, pinion seals and pinion flanges. Note – not every gear kit needs or includes all of these components. No more getting half way thru the job and realizing that you don’t have everything you need to finish the job! All of these bits are included in our suggested retail prices unless specifically noted otherwise. We can can also supply any other needed parts such as complete genuine Timken bearing kits.

Over the years we have supported and sponsored numerous professional race teams in competitive events with outstanding results. We also supply several militaries around the world.

Our gear kits are rated as Stage 1 – OEM or non-GBR gears. Stage 2 – GBR designed for heavy duty use. Stage 3 – GBR designed and rated for extreme duty use. We also cryogenically treat our Stage 3 gears.

3.54 Rover | Part No. FTC262

Replacement for the stock ratio & gear set in a Rover style differential. This ratio and gear set was used in all Rover style differentials in coil sprung models starting in 1970 with the original Range Rover Classic thru the 2010 Defenders*. In addition to the gear set this kit includes set up shims (both pinion height and pinion bearing load) and a new pinion seal. If you are fitting these to an earlier differential (pre 1997), bear in mind that over the years various minor changes occurred to these gear sets. If in doubt as to the compatibility, we can advise you of what additional parts that may be needed such as pinion washers, pinion nut/bolt or pinion flange. Please inquire before ordering.

We can also supply complete differential bearing kits for this gear set. If you are installing new differential bearings, there are both imperial (early) and metric (later) carrier bearings used. If in doubt, again inquire as to your specific application.

GBR XDC – Extreme Duty/Competition Differential Gears

When we design a competition differential gear set our philosophy is – no compromise! Our competitors do not share this idea. As an example, our extreme duty gears are based off of a 7 tooth pinion gear. One of our competitors bases theirs off an 8 tooth pinion. This results in a finer tooth count of the ring gear. As we discuss in more detail in our more comprehensive technical section, the most significant determinant of the overall strength of a ring and pinion gear set is the size of the ring gear teeth. Following is a comparison between some of our gears.

Here is an example, a 4.10, 4.11,4.12 and a 4.14 ratios are all interchangeable but there is a considerable difference in durability between these four gears.

4.10 (10X41) 41 tooth ring gear

The same concept applies to our other competition gear sets as follows:

Another example of our no compromise approach to gear design is the pinion nut. Below is an example of what we use compared to some of our competition.

In 1997, Land Rover converted from a 16 mm pinion nut to a 12mm pinion bolt. You might ask, “why did they do this?” They did this because it was a manufacturing efficiency i.e. it is cheaper to produce a gear in this fashion. Some of our competition has also followed this lead with even their HD gear sets! We are not interested this compromise. A larger bolt allows a much greater clamping force on the pinion bearings.

Some of our competition is also touting a chemical coating to provide a “unique appearance ” and “corrosion protection” to their gears. We are not sure why you would need corrosion protection on a differential gear. If you get water in the axle case – change the oil – immediately!

Same goes for the “unique appearance”. Once it is installed you don’t see it – it’s enclosed in an axle case! Instead of spending money on a meaningless chemical coating, we spend our money on something that adds performance such as cryogenic treatments. We are unique – GBR XDC gears are the only cryogenically treated gears on the market. Although wild claims are made the benefits of Cryo-treatments (double & even triple durability claims), our feeling is that you get a good solid 10% benefit. When asking about and discussing these different ratios many people use the terms  4.10 and 4.11 interchangeably. They are definitely different products. If in doubt as to what ratio your potential vendor is offering, ask for the tooth count. If they don’t know or claim the the tooth count doesn’t matter, this should tell you something about the vendor you are dealing with.

GBR 4.14 Front Reverse Rotation – Extreme Duty

GBR exclusive – 7X29 tooth count/reverse rotation

This is an extreme duty gear set designed and manufactured to our specifications. It is designed to compensate for the vehicles differential gearing due to tire size increases and to reduce the overall gearing for increased off road performance and aggressive off roading.

These are a 7X29 tooth count, which is reduced from 9X37 in our Stage 2 – 4.11 gear kits. This coarser tooth count increases the durability of this gear set by 20% compared to our own 4.11 ratio. They are a reverse rotation design.They are interchangeable with 4.11 or 4.10 gears but can be up to 50% stronger. As a result these are the most durable mid ratio front Land Rover gears one can buy anywhere, at any price. When installed in a differential housing utilizing our Thrust Bolt kit, this is a brutally strong differential, significantly exceeding the strength of common conversion differentials such as Toyotas.

Designed for the Rover owner that wants or needs a significant reduction in gearing along with maximum durability. These are approximately 12.5% lower than stock 3.54 gearing. This gear includes a much larger 22 mm pinion nut compared to a stock gear set, requiring vehicles equipped with Roto-Flex rear driveshafts to convert to a regular u-joint rear driveshaft. We can supply heavy duty driveshafts upon request.

This is an extreme duty gear set. These are a 7X29 tooth count, which is reduced from 9X37 in our Stage 2 – 4.11 gear kits. This coarser tooth count increases the durability of this gear set by 20% compared to our own 4.11 ratio. They are interchangeable with both 4.11 or 4.10 ratios. We also cryogenically treat these gear sets to maximize their durability. As a result these are the most durable mid ratio rear Land Rover gears one can buy anywhere, at any price. GBR 4.43 Front Reverse Rotation – Extreme Duty

GBR exclusive – 4.43 ratio/7X31 tooth count/reverse rotation/cryogenically treated

Designed for the Rover owner that wants to significantly reduce the vehicles differential gearing due to tire size increases and to reduce the over all gearing for increased off road performance This ratio exactly splits the difference between the two common alternative ratios traditionally available (4.1ish and 4.7ish) and is about the same as re-gearing your transfer case to the 1.41 high range but has the additional benefit of lowering low range by the same amount. It is approximately an 18% reduction.

These are a 7X31 tooth count and very durable being based on our heavy duty 7 tooth pinion gear design. As a result these can be used for very aggressive off road use. P38 3.54 | Part No. STC2810

Replacement for a 3.54 stock ratio. This differential is found in 1995 thru 2002 P38A Range Rovers, 2001 on Defender 110 and 130 rear. In addition to the gear set the kit includes, pinion height shims, an oversize pinion bearing preload collar, pinion seal, an oil drain restriction sleeve. Bear in mind that over the years, there are several minor differences in Rover P38 differential gears. We can advise you of any compatibility issues and supply any additional parts that may be required for proper installation. Check your application before ordering.

We supply the oversize pinion bearing preload collar to eliminate the need to order all 10 factory preload collar sizes to obtain the correct pinion bearing preload. This collar is designed to be milled to the correct size. Inquire as to whether your installer has the equipment to perform this operation.

These gears are a regular rotation design that was normally used in the rear of the vehicles. P38A Range Rovers used a reverse rotation design for the front differential but unfortunately Land Rover discontinued this part and superseded the part number to rear gear kit. We say unfortunate because P38 differentials have an outer pinion bearing lubrication issue and running a rear gear in a front differential puts the acceleration load on the outer pinion bearing, which has the lubrication problem issue to start with. This is why we designed and include the oil drain restriction sleeve with this kit for rear applications. The restrictor designed is designed to improve the outer pinion bearing lubrication by pooling the gear oil at the bearing.

P38 Front 4.10 | Part No. GBR410P38F

This is a gear set developed by us to reduce the gearing for P38 differentials. This differential is found in 1995 thru 2002 P38A Range Rovers, 2001 on Defender 110 and 130 rear axles. It lowers the gearing approximately 12.5% to compensate for changes to the vehicle such as larger tires and improve the performance for specialist uses such as towing or aggressive off roading. It maintains the original reverse rotation design that improves the longevity of the differential pinion bearings by maintaining the load on the better lubricated and larger inner pinion bearing under acceleration. We feel this is very important feature because a lower ratio is spinning faster and hence can exacerbate the outer pinion bearing lubrication problem. Tooth count is 10X41.

Kit includes the gear set, pinion height shims, oversize pinion bearing preload collar, genuine viton pinion seal, new 22 mm pinion nut and washer. We can also supply complete differential bearing kits for this gear set.

These are the stock gearing for Defender 110’s & 130s. This was the rear differential for 1993 thru Feb 2002 Defenders. Salisbury front axles do exist but are quite rare being found only in a few specialist military and civilian applications. If in doubt as to what you have, please inquire. Kit comes complete with set up shims (both pinion height and backlash), new crush sleeve, and genuine viton pinion seal.

4.70 Salisbury| Part No. AEU 1392

This is a stock replacement gear set for vehicles originally equipped with a 4.70 ratio or a kit designed to reduce the existing higher ratio for specialist applications such as larger tires, towing or aggressive off roading. If you are re-gearing a Salisbury differential from either 3.54 or our own 4.11 ratios, you will need to change the differential carrier to compensate for this change. This includes high performance aftermarket carriers such as ARBs or Detroit Truetracs. Contact us for specific information concerning this.

Dana 60

Land Rover Salisbury differentials are very similar to Dana 60 differentials. We refer to them as English Dana 60’s. Brits refer to them as American Salisbury’s! The gear sets are very similar and can be interchanged with some minor modifications. We can supply Dana 60 gear sets in ratios other than what is available from Land Rover.
